Have you ever wanted to see the earth from space? Now you can see what it looks like right on your desktop. Planet Earth displays a realtime 3-dimensional model of the Earth with the current cloud information downloaded directly over the internet at regular intervals. Night and day shadows are updated continuously and you can rotate it to view any spot on the Earth.
A US$18 registration fee is requested.
How is it done?
Planet Earth uses an advanced raytracing engine to generate a very realistic model of the Earth. Cloud data is provided by the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC). The cloud data is updated approximatly every 6 hours. For more information on how the cloud data is generated, go to the SSEC website at <http://www.ssec.wisc.edu>.
How to operate Planet Earth
There are 5 controls for Planet Earth and they are at the top of the window.
• Sun: This toggles the display of day/night shadows.
• Cloud: This toggles the display of cloud data.
• Position Crosshair: This will center your view on whatever location you click on. If you want to view the south pole, just use this tool to move your viewing lattitude down until you reach the it. It may take a few clicks to get to where you want if it is not visible.
• Hand: With the hand you can rotate the Earth on it’s axis. To set it rotating freely just drag it to the speed you want it to rotate at and release (Note: The “Allow Free Rotation” checkbox must be on in the preferences).
• Zoom: You can magnify or reduce your image with the zoom tool. Holding down the Option key turns the zoom in cursor to a zoom out cursor.
Important: Make sure that your “Map” control panel is set to your current geographical location. Also make sure that your time zone and daylight savings time settings are correctly set in the “Date & Time” control panel.
